Do you love the beach, but hate the crowds, traffic, and overpopulation of
resorts that attract hordes of tourists? Why not consider Chesapeake Bay Country as the place to relocate, retire or buy a second home instead? Located just 2 – 2 1/2 hours outside of Washington D.C. and Northern Virginia or and an hour from Richmond, Virginia, Chesapeake Bay country is one of the best kept secrets about coastal Virginia. It’s still rural enough for solitude and close enough to metropolitan areas like Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Williamsburg to provide culture and entertainment nearby.

The Chesapeake Bay area was actually settled in the 1600′s and is rich with history. Some of the best seafood restaurants are found in Gloucester, Gloucester Point, Matthews and Gwynn’s Island because the restaurants obtain fresh local catches of fish, oysters, scallops and blue crabs. Homes with boat docks and waterfront property abound because tidal rivers that lead to the Chesapeake Bay slice the land. Build the estate you’ve always dreamed about on agricultural land – always for sale. If you want to relocate, retire or buy a second home in Chesapeake Bay country, the time is now. Join me for a short journey through the best of Chesapeake Bay Country.

West Point
West Point Virginia is located six miles off Interstate 64 between Richmond and Williamsburg and has a population of roughly 2,900 people. Property tax rates are low compared to more congested areas of Virginia. Many families want to live in West Point, because the school district is so outstanding it falls within the top 10 school districts of Virginia each year. West Point is a quiet Southern town, with some stunning 19th and early 20th Century architecture in the historic district. West Point is located at the place where the Mattoponi and Pamunky Rivers join the York River. Once you cross the bridge on Route 33 you enter the Upper Peninisula and Northern Neck, bordering the Chesapeake Bay.

Gloucester & Gloucester Point
Across the York River from historic Yorktown, (an alternate route to Gloucester is to take Route 33 from West Point) Gloucester and Gloucester Point are towns that are slowly increasing in population. Here you will find waterfront property that has been utilized by waterman since Colonial times. Many of the waterfront properties were once plantations or home to Native Americas. Average homes for middle class families are numerous in this area. Choice real estate along the river is available infrequently, and comes at a premium price.

Matthews
In the charming little town of Matthews, the home buyer will find waterfront property on tidal rivers that lead to the Chesapeake Bay. Homes often include a boat dock and marinas are also nearby. Eat fresh, local seafood in the restaurants and play a round of golf at Tides Mill in Lancaster County – a world-renowned golf course. Visit Donks Theater for a L’il Oprey show of country western entertainment. Famous singers who played here include Earl Scruggs, Loretta Lynn, and Tammy Wynette. Matthews historic district dates to Colonial times. Find relaxation along the Chesapeake Bay on a secluded, almost private beach not widely known to tourists — Festival Beach. It’s the perfect place to get some sun, swim, or do some bird watching. ‘Downtown’ Matthews has banks, a video store, gas station, and auto parts store. A Coast Guard station is located just before the drawbridge.

Gwynn’s Island
Cross the drawbridge from Matthews onto enchanting Gywnn’s Island, known by Colonial Indian tribes as a place ‘inhabited by the Great Spirit’ and once visited by Captain John Smith. The island has a nautical ‘Cape Cod’ feel to it without ostentatious neighbors or the high property taxes and cost of living. Gywnn’s Island is three miles long and two miles wide and has a population of roughly 900. A number of residents have notoriously lived past 100 in this part of Chesapeake Bay country. Waterfront estates are found along the perimeter and the center of the island is still dotted with small waterman’s cottages, many converted to second homes or vacation homes. John Dixon, author of Gwynn’s Island: a Brief History, describes Gwynn’s Island as “happy homes and fertile farms on smiling waters.”

These are just a few of the areas that make Chesapeake Bay Country a pleasant place to retire, relocate, or purchase a second home or vacation home. Come visit and explore this little known area. But, be prepared to fall in love with it and leave your heart.

The Meaning of Skull and Crossbones Symbol

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

The symbol of a human skull and crossbones was a common sight on medieval pirate flags and now, the Unicode 2620 computer document. Other than these, the symbol has been flaunted on cemetery entrances, radiation outposts and toxic dumps.

History of the Skull and Crossbones Symbol:

The history of the skull and crossbones symbol dates back to the 1700s, when the entrances to Spanish cemeteries were marked with actual human skulls and bones. This ‘campo santo’ practice led to the symbol being associated with death. The sign was engraved on tombstones across Europe. Many crucifixes were designed to feature the skull and crossbones symbol beneath the corpus or depiction of Jesus’ body. Most of the Christian association with the symbol comes from the mention of the place of Christ’s crucifixion as ‘Golgotha’ or the place of a skull, in the New Testament of the Holy Bible (Mark 15:22).

The 1732 Nuestra Señora del Pilar church structure that overlooked the Recoleta Cemetery, Buenos Aires, Argentina, was designed to depict the symbol. By the 1800s, the skull and crossbones symbol was used to label containers of poisonous substances, alongside the ‘XXX’ symbol. In the nineteenth century, the presence of the symbol on poison bottles became ubiquitous. It was also used by military forces on ‘Jolly Roger’ submarine flags, reconnaissance battalion emblems and fighter unit aircraft tails. The skull and crossbones symbol is today, one of the most recognizable squadron markings.

Meaning of Skull and Crossbones Symbol:

The symbol is indicative of danger and impending harm. It’s association with death, poison and secret societies and their undertakings has resulted in the symbol being recognized as a fraternity and unicode motif. Today, the skull and crossbones is commonly associated with references to:

HTML entity
Hussars and dragoons
Nazi SS service
British lancer regiments
Los húsares de la muerte, a paramilitary guerrilla group in Chile
Chetniks or the Serbian royalist and nationalist paramilitaries
Kuperjanov’s Partisan Battalion
The skull and crossbones remains a standard symbol for poison, even beyond industrial usage. It is a sign that environmentally conscious consumers look for. The symbol has been adopted all through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, for various reasons. Business and religious fraternities, secret societies, sororites and even the public domain used the skull and crossbones symbol on their badges and logos. As a hazard symbol it warns about the location of toxic material. The symbol is usually accompanied by supplemental information that specifies the nature of the hazard. The use of the symbol has certainly increased since the 1700s. The modern consumer continues to interpret the sign as an indication to ‘stay away’ from some area or material.

Israel to Scrutinise Military Conduct

Monday, September 20th, 2010

The Israeli defence minister, Amir Peretz, has launched a military commission to examine the performance of the military during the 34-day war in Lebanon, amid increasing domestic criticism of the government’s conduct.

The failure of the Israeli armed forces to defeat Hizbullah guerrillas during the conflict has delivered a serious blow to the confidence of the military, which has a reputation for dramatic and overwhelming victories following the wars of 1967 and 1973.

An initial spirit of unity among the Israeli public evaporated in the last days of the war as hawkish generals, including the former defence minister Shaul Mofaz, castigated the government for not launching a more aggressive invasion sooner. Israel’s political left also fell out with the government towards the end of the war, arguing that military chiefs had no strategy for their invasion of Lebanon.

Criticism mounted yesterday when it was revealed that the military chief of staff, Dan Halutz, had made a major sale of shares in between back-to-back meetings on the day the conflict began. The sale was seen as evidence of corruption from an official who would be in control of the conduct of the war and the resulting knock-on effects on the Israeli stock market.

Opinion polls had little good news for prime minister Ehud Olmert’s government. A poll by TNS-Teleseker found support for Mr Olmert dropping to 40% from 78% in the early weeks of the war, while Mr Peretz’s approval ratings fell from 61% to 28%.

A second poll by the Dahaf Research Institute found that 57% believed Mr Peretz should resign and 70% opposed a ceasefire that did not provide for the return of two Israeli soldiers captured by Hizbullah which sparked the war.

The Israeli foreign minister, Tzipi Livni, said at the United Nations today that a joint UN-Lebanese peacekeeping force being sent to southern Lebanon must “fully implement” the UN resolution that ended the war on Monday.

Israeli officials are pushing for the force to disarm Hizbullah fighters and believe the UN resolution requires this, although the wording of the document is deliberately vague and Lebanese leaders are proposing a compromise whereby Hizbullah will not show their arsenal openly.

Alongside the 1,110 Lebanese killed in the conflict, 118 Israeli soldiers and 39 civilians were killed. Israel failed to stop Hizbullah from firing rockets into towns in northern Israel and was unable to drive small bands of Hizbullah fighters out of several strategic towns in southern Lebanon, despite superior firepower and training.

Mr Peretz’s commission would be led by the former military chief and centrist government minister Amnon Lipkin-Shahak, and would include the former air commander Herzl Bodinger and the pharmaceuticals tycoon Eli Hurvitz.

It was expected to deliver a report within three weeks, although it was unclear whether its findings would be binding. A similar commission after the 1982 Sabra and Shatila massacres in Beirut led to the dismissal of the then defence minister Ariel Sharon and his absence from frontline Israeli politics until the late 1990s.

Israeli political analysts believe the conflict has driven Israeli politics to the right, with serious damage done to the ruling Kadima party’s plans for unilateral withdrawal from the West Bank and little public desire for a more dovish negotiated withdrawal.

Such views fared badly during the war, according to Professor Efraim Inbar of the Begin-Sadat centre for Strategic Studies. “I think talk to your enemy and all this dovish discourse has been much discredited in Israel now, and I think that’s healthy,” he told Guardian Unlimited. “I would say the majority of Israelis feel that we live in a jungle here.”

The deputy prime minister, Shimon Peres, said the government would survive the fallout from the conflict. “It (Israel) is a democratic country and criticism is part of democracy. So I won’t be surprised if there is criticism but I do believe the government will hold on,” he told Reuters.

Getting an Entry Level Intelligence Job

Friday, September 10th, 2010

Many people are drawn to careers in intelligence because they are portrayed as being filled with intrigue and excitement. In truth, not all intelligence jobs are like those you see in the movies – especially entry level intelligence positions. Because the intelligence community is so broad (seventeen separate organizations) and the jobs themselves so varied, the work settings are also just as diverse. A person in an entry level intelligence role could find themselves in a lab, in an office, in the field, or even on Capitol Hill.

What this means is that no matter your background or your interests, you have the opportunity to be hired for an entry level intelligence job if that is your goal. The key is figuring out where you would best fit in and then pursuing the education you need to stand out among other applicants.

Entry Level Intelligence Opportunities

Many of the intelligence organizations have special entry level intelligence programs for new graduates. This includes internships, fellowships, scholarships, recruitment events, and special programs for ex-military. Here is a list of a few of the entry level intelligence opportunities that are offered:

– State Department: The Stay in School Program allows students to work part-time during school terms and full-time during periods of vacation.

– Defense Intelligence Agency: The DIA conducts many recruitment events around the country including at job fairs and colleges.

– Federal Bureau of Investigations: Outstanding students interested in becoming special agents can apply for the Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program.

– National Security Agency: For those transitioning from the military, the NSA has a program that allows you to keep your benefits and apply time served towards retirement even if you are hired for an entry level intelligence position.

– Department of Homeland Security: The Office of Intelligence & Analysis participates in the Pat Roberts Intelligence Scholars Program (PRISP) which offers entry level intelligence professionals with certain educational backgrounds $25,000 stipends.

The above are just a few of the many programs that the federal government has for individuals who are motivated to become intelligence professionals. Many of these are competitive, however, so it helps to earn a degree that shows your determination to join the intelligence community. Even if you already have a degree in a certain field, going back to school to earn an intelligence specific degree will greatly increase your chances.

When Only the CIA Will Do

Even though there are 16 other players in the intelligence community, some individuals have set their sights on getting a job at the CIA. If you are one of those people, then an intelligence degree program may help you achieve your goals. A high quality bachelor’s or master’s degree in intelligence or counterintelligence is what many people may call “going to a CIA school.” There are a few colleges that offer these types of programs, but you have to make sure that the curriculum is on par with what a CIA school would offer if there were such a thing.

Examples of courses that are essential to you receiving the type of training to prepare you for a career in the CIA include:
– Intelligence Collection
– Counterintelligence
– Propaganda and Disinformation
– Clandestine Communications
– Protection Studies and Counterterrorism Studies

Once you are enrolled in a CIA school – type program, you can increase your chances of getting a job at the CIA by applying for one of their internship programs. They have several student positions such as the National Clandestine Service Internship Program. If you are accepted this CIA school program, you will have the opportunity to work at the CIA making a competitive salary while still working on your degree. Additionally, once you graduate, you will be considered for full time employment.

Divorces Inflict Home Front Damage on Us Troops As Iraq War Drags on

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

In an army base in Baghdad, in functional wooden booths in a white-walled room, a row of young men in uniform stare at computer screens. Many are emailing, instant messaging or playing online card games with their wives and girlfriends seven or more time zones away. There is a background hum from others talking on a bank of phones. One soldier can be heard protesting: ‘You have no idea what I’m going through out here.’

With the Iraq war in its sixth year, some of these American soldiers are on their third or fourth combat tour – 15 months away from home with just 18 days’ leave. The strain is showing on their relationships and many will return home, exhausted, to find a disenchanted wife has walked out. Divorce rates among the US military are soaring.

Corporal Leonard Allen, 33, is missing his son’s first year of life. A member of the 2-4 Infantry ‘Warrior’ Battalion, 10th Mountain Division, Allen served a nine-month stint in Afghanistan in 2006. Normally he could then have expected at least a year at home. But eight months later he and his comrades were training in Kuwait, then deploying for a long tour in Baghdad.

‘There were a lot of deployment babies after Afghanistan,’ Allen joked. His son Colton is eight months old. ‘I’ve seen two and a half months of his life. My wife Andrea gives me daily progress reports – he’s learning to crawl – but it’s a shame when a father has to miss being there. Six or nine months here wouldn’t be so bad, but these 15-month tours are killing everybody.’

Allen, a former bill collector now regularly on patrol in the streets of Baghdad, married two years ago in Las Vegas. ‘We knew there was a chance I’d be sent to Iraq. She was pretty down for a while, quite sad, and she worries about me here. She knows why I’m here and she’s glad, but she wants me to come home.’

Andrea, 33, keeps in touch with her husband via the internet. In an email from their home at Fort Polk, Louisiana, she told The Observer: ‘I miss him every minute of every day. It helps to think about that first hug I’ll get when I see him next and all the things we’ll do when he comes home.

‘When he left for this deployment, Colton was only two and a half months old. It’s so hard that my husband is missing most of our son’s “firsts” and that Colton only gets to see his daddy on pictures or videos. I tell Leonard about everything and send him tons of pictures, but a picture can’t capture everything, like Colton’s funny sense of humor or how sweet it is to listen to him babbling in his crib when he’s waking up in the morning. Fifteen months is just way too long.’

Iraq, which has seen husbands return home with mental scars or missing limbs, preys on her mind. ‘I worry about him all the time; even if I’m not consciously thinking about it, the fear is always there. Any time someone rings the doorbell, my heart starts beating faster and I say a prayer that it’s not someone coming to tell me something happened to him.’

The couple have rules for their long-distance marriage. ‘It’s impossible to explain how hard it is to be separated from your spouse for such a long time. You really need to have good communication and a strong commitment to make it work. We’re really careful to never actually fight on the phone, but if we have any kind of disagreement we make sure it’s resolved before we hang up, and always end our calls with an “I love you”.’

The pressure of deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq have become too much for some. There were about 8,700 divorces involving American soldiers last year, compared to an estimated 5,500 in 2001. Research shows that career soldiers are much more likely to contemplate divorce than in the past.

The anguish is exemplified by John Callahan, 42, a corporal who was away from home for nearly two years. In November 2006, Callahan’s machine-gun malfunctioned during a firefight, wounding him in the groin and leg. Recovering from an operation in hospital, he spoke to his wife by phone and could hear a male voice in the background. ‘Haven’t you told him it’s over?’, said his wife’s boyfriend. ‘That you aren’t wearing his wedding ring any more?’

Some couples face reunions in which the returning soldier has been disfigured, paralyzed or lost one or more limbs or suffered a life-changing brain injury. US marine Ty Ziegel suffered horrific burns in a suicide bomb attack in Iraq but returned home and married his childhood sweetheart – only to separate just before their first wedding anniversary.

Last year suicides among military personnel reached their highest level since 1990 when 108 soldiers took their lives, compared with 102 in 2006 and 85 in 2005. Combat stress is growing, with one study finding that one in five personnel returns from Iraq and Afghanistan with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder or major depression.

Unlike during the Second World War and the Vietnam War, when many more people were directly touched by the conflict, today’s military families can feel isolated from the rest of society. Separation can be particularly difficult for young couples with little worldly experience. Specialist Chris Haun, 21, from Louisville, Kentucky, married his girlfriend, Jess, just before he was deployed to Baghdad, but said they have already hit problems. ‘We’ve had many nights when we wanted to separate,’ he said. ‘We’ve had downs as well as ups and we’ve talked about divorce.’

He continued: ‘She was a very dependent woman and now she’s becoming more independent. She is 20 and in college and getting ready to hit that age with new freedoms, new friends and alcohol. It’s a time of life when things change. It’s a day-to-day game. You always have the question in your head, “What’s going on?”, but that’s where the trust comes in.’

The US army has sought to address the issue with counseling and chaplain-led programs such as Strong Bonds, which includes weekend retreats for couples. At military bases there are television slots and leaflets offering advice on ‘How to keep a marriage strong during a deployment’, with tips including ‘Read a relationship book together’, ‘Communicate’, ‘Pray for each other’ and ‘Avoid arguments’.

James Pritchard, a chaplain at Loyalty base in east Baghdad, said that 38 soldiers had come to him to discuss marital problems since the start of the year. ‘Probably 10 of them had found out or got evidence that their wife was leaving them or seeing somebody else,’ he said.

‘It’s a big issue, especially with younger soldiers who’ve married somebody they haven’t known very long. They suddenly have extra money coming in and the lifestyle of the spouse at home lends itself to extra-marital affairs. We’ve had soldiers go home and find the house empty, the wife and kids gone.’

He added: ‘I tell soldiers that, if she was a topless dancer before you met her, when you come home don’t be surprised if she’s no longer your wife.’

Sergeant Larry Driscoll, 42, who has been married twice, said: ‘One deployment has a profound effect on a marriage. If the marriage is on shaky ground, you think distance will make it better, but it exacerbates the problems three times over. To get through a second or third deployment, that’s a miracle.

Help Protect Your Self Storage Facility Clients From Environmental Claims

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

The self storage industry has been one of the fastest-growing sectors of the United States commercial real estate industry in the last 30 years. There are now over 52,000 primary self storage facilities in the country, and in 2008 the industry had total sales in excess of $20 billion.* Self storage companies all over the country are acquiring new customers as people relocate and sell their homes due to the economy. Additionally, as of 2009, more than 700,000 self storage units nationwide are rented to military personnel who are serving away from their homes.

The rapid growth has forced self storage owners and managers to protect their premises from the increased activity that these sites have experienced. One of the main ways they can do this is by having a solid pollution liability insurance policy to cover themselves against potential problems that could occur from environmental exposures.

Self storage owners and managers should consider securing a Site Specific Pollution Liability policy, which will provide coverage for supervised and unsupervised self storage facilities throughout the U.S. Coverage can include: third party liability for bodily injury and property damage claims, first party cleanup costs, and defense costs; Transportation Pollution Liability coverage for waste hauled by the insured or contracted carriers; off-site coverage for non-owned waste disposal sites; automatic Extended Reporting Period (ERP) with optional ERP of up to three years; and an optional Mold enhancement.

Claims caused by a pollution condition may not be covered via the insured’s General Liability or Property form, so it is important for these organizations to purchase more protection. Coverage can be tailored specifically for self storage facilities and their exposures, such as abandoned, potentially hazardous materials, as well as mold.

What Potential Exposures Does a Self Storage Facility Have?

· Abandoned hazardous waste
· Midnight dumping
· Mold
· Hazardous runoff during rain events.
· The accumulation of petroleum hydrocarbons in the soil.
· Misuse of self storage spaces involving activities unknown to the facility owner or manager.
· And many other exposures…

Many self storage facilities are affiliated with various associations dedicated to educating members about the challenges present in this type of operation. Some of them also provide information to members of the self storage facility industry on regulations and insurance recommendations made to these professionals. Now is a great opportunity to reach out to your self storage facility clients to make sure they have the most effective coverage in place.

If you are someone searching for a self-storage site to store your valuables, make sure you choose one with the proper coverage. Don’t be caught unawares and leave your personal belongings someplace where illegal activities, waste dumping, or some other unsavory activity could be taking place where the owner of the facility has no coverage to protect you and your belongings. It is best to choose a self-storage facility that also belongs to one of the above-mentioned organizations that educates people in the industry about the safest business practices and the best coverage available.

Motivation And Lessons In Inspiration From The Best Coach I Know

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Every once in a while you run into someone who has mastered the art of living, someone who doesn’t just move through life waiting for a certain time or place or person to make his or her time here a life of consequence, someone who doesn’t just live on the surface but really soaks it in; the good and the bad; someone who treats life as true adventure.

I was recently treated to a visit from just such a person. This is a man who touched the lives of my deceased brother, taken far too young and my family many years ago. We were all so young then with our whole lives in front of us. So much time has passed imagine my surprise when a set of seemingly unrelated circumstances brought us together after all these years. (You know, as I grow older my belief in and awareness of serendipity increases!)

It seems Coach Harvey has written a book about his life, his adventures and some of the people who have left footprints on his heart. He is by his own description an ordinary man but clearly he is exceptional. What an honor to receive the book and find he has devoted a chapter in it about the special bond and relationship he shared with my brother during and beyond his days as quarterback for Coach Harvey’s team in high school. A part of the inscription he wrote in my book said “I truly hope you find joy and interest in reading this, my book of memories.” I did Coach, I really did.

After receiving the books, one for each of my family who are still here, we had the opportunity to chat on the phone. As most reunions go, there were promises of getting together for a visit the next time he passed through Phoenix. I of course thought it was another of those well intentioned but never realized plans.

Well, this man is full of surprises. About 4:00 o’clock on a recent sunny afternoon my mother gets a call from Coach Fred Harvey. He is in Tucson and would love to see us all and catch up. Was I surprised… um yes?

Here is a man who is 87 years old and driving from Mississippi to Prescott, Arizona to be with an old friend in a nursing home who he unfailingly visits each year. He is spry, interested and interesting with a razor sharp memory, wit and his eyes still twinkle with genuine delight! He has stopped to visit a number of people on his way. He tells us he has to be home before spring break ends because he is coaching a high school team again. After retiring several times he finds he still misses it. Over the years Fred has traveled and coached in many foreign countries and I can only imagine the number of young men and their families whose lives this man has left an impression on. He talks of maybe writing another book.

As I listen to his tales, like everyone’s life, some are sad, some are happy but at all times the one thing you hear loud and clear is an unyielding ever present passion for living and what comes next. I find myself becoming inspired to do the same. Listening to him reminds me of when I was younger and lived what they call a spontaneous life; when I was eager to veer off the beaten path just to see what might be there and if I would like it!

I have always heard the best coaches and teachers lead by example; now I know this is true. Thanks Coach Fred Harvey for your visit and your message is loud and clear…

As Nina Maddux wrote in the forward to his book and it so perfectly captures the essence of his story, the man he is and most importantly the lesson we can learn from him:

“All the emotions I experienced while reading Hell, Yes. I’d Do It All Again, inspired and challenged me to seize the moments as they come, hold on to them, learn from them and never give up.”

I could not have said it better. When we parted we each received a hearty hug and a kiss on the cheek as he said “I always tell people I care about I love them because you just might not see them again.”

So what are the lessons I gathered?

Life is sweet and too precious to waste. Isn’t there something more for you?
Write the book, climb the mountain, visit the homeland, start the business you love even if you won’t be a millionaire, work on a cruise ship, dance the tango in a foreign land, eat the cake, squeeze the grand kids too tight, tell yourself how you cute and special you are and everyone else while you’re at it.

It really is that simple, seize the moments, let go of the “shoulds”, do the “wants” and look for what’s next and you will find it!

Regulating Home Tuition

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

We are referring to a situation where you tutor your child at home. The parent opting for a home tuition must take this word “discipline” as a sincere concern. During such home tuition, the child often tends to takes different meaning of such tuition and takes it just as a long vacation and enjoys it at whatever price. This temperament needs early discipline so that it does not become a habit and making it a whole failure.

Home tuition is customizable as per your needs. You and your child are going to decide when you are going to study, and which place. As mentioned your child too has decision power on when and where to study, and hence such decision should be made early to avoid any wrong conclusion at child side. However, if the student is too young to be a part of such a decision, it’s you who are going to make a time table for study and you must follow it. This is because when there is no external body to mentor your child and you know there is no examination entity going to take test of your child, there are chances you might not stick to the time table you prepared yourself and hence the best practice is to follow the schedule strictly, or say, practice what you preach.

There may be a different case where child is mature enough and can well participate in planning. In such cases, consult your child and think of best time for tutoring, what he would like to learn and what technique he may like to be applied. Once you have the list in hand, go by your experience and make a feasible time table that suits both of you.

Plus, some schools who follow strict education system give homework to their student and as a general assumption, if a student is taking tuition it is expected that homework becomes a part of these tuition. So, you must ensure that your child keenly sits and completes all assignments.

You must closely observe your child’s temperament since what he would be learning at early age would become behavior eventually. Unlike at school where your child would automatically try to copy important elements of his peers and teacher, while at home, you will need to monitor your child yourself and keep on correcting him at right instances where you find the behavior to be unsatisfactory. This will keep a check on your child’s speaking habits and overall behavior at home.

For home tutoring, the location where study needs to be carried out should be specified. And the child must reach the study location on time as decided with all required study documents and stationary. Don’t be that easy on child that he takes undue advantage and turn the study location into playground. Please must not forget, it’s you only who are going to mentor your child in all aspects, and thus must enter the study area in professional manner and stick to the laid down principles.

At last its home where you are conducting this tuition. In such atmosphere, where child lives his joy life, it sometimes gets difficult for a child to be focused and discipline, after all its home. At these times, you might tend to lose your patience. To avoid such situation, you must give your child a breather and same time you must enjoy too.

What you should know is that home tutoring is not an easy task. The known surroundings does not allow child to concentrate on work and easily vulnerable to indiscipline. But if you are striving to achieve your goals with precautionary measures, the results of home tutoring would be rewarding.

Steel Art in Thailand – Miracle of the 21st Century

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Thailand is making a name in the international arena in making steel arts. Many Thai online sites showcase their craftsmanship in the form of Alien, Star Wars characters, Predator, and so on. These are made from scrap metal and are freestanding.

The development of the industry started about 15 years ago. Small and very basic models were being made by independent artists using wire, bolts and nuts. Stick figures, motorcycles and animal models were being made. This was but a hobby and there was no commercial intention behind the creation of these figures, they were just a way of spending time for 12 craftsmen.
After the appearance of the first Predator movie in 1987, this industry experienced its first growth. The artists were by this time adept at basic models and were seeking challenge. So they decided to work together to create a Predator statue, made from scrap metal.

The Thailand manufacturing industry for the creation of metal sculptures could only grow so fast because there was a lot of cheap scrap metal. These were sourced from Ford Thailand, scrap yards, boat manufacturers, military suppliers etc. 5 artists together mad the first Predator, which was 1.5 meters high and took four months. 20 workers also volunteered time to complete this statue. At that time no internet existed, and there were no computer designing, digital photography. The entire design was made from one photo and this was just a poster of the Predator which was imported from USA.

Artists had no design ideas, and no plans on how to start construction. The work was basically a social activity. A three dimensional frame was made from wires and artists searched through the masses of scrap metals and discussed which parts would look good on the statue. Drinking was as much a part of the event as was construction. The artist voted to complete the job if anyone thought there were improvements to be made.

The finished statue was not sold but passed between the people who made it. Finally it was donated to charity. But the legacy that was born never ceased to exist. Now it is a bit difficult to get the workers with skill and team spirit. But once such a group is assembled, they work with a great sense of family spirit. They share the glory of making a statue and are happy to assist each other.

Thailand has developed a great hand crafted steel works industry. There are many people involved in this business and they are getting great offers as well. For example, the Art From Steel, Thailand’s largest manufacturer of steel art, gets regular offers to make factories replica, Alien V’s Predator bar furniture, symbols and gift items. Science fiction seems to be the most attractive of the works. Along with the Aliens, Star Wars and Predators, they are also producing Terminator, Gremlin etc designs as well. So it is becoming a good source of revenue for the Thailand people as well. There are scopes for major developments in this sector.

Who Provides Student Loans?

Student loan programs, administered by the Federal government and private lenders, have traditionally helped youngsters attend both, graduate and undergraduate school. Federal loans, administered under the Federal Student Aid Programs, are of the following types: Federal Stafford Loans, which are available to students, and Federal Parent PLUS Loans, meant for parents and guardians interested in financing their child’s undergraduate education. Of course, the latter would require the parents/guardians to have a good credit history. Both, Stafford and PLUS loans, can be obtained directly from the government, or from private lender’s whose loans are federally guaranteed. Low interest loans are offered to students by schools participating in the Federal Perkins Loans Program. Sallie Mae, a giant lender in the realm of student loans, was created in 1972 as a government enterprise. It was privatized in the year 2004, and the company provides both, private loans and federally backed loans. Private banks and non-profit agencies like Student Loan Corp also provide student loans.

Consequences of Student Loan Default

Repaying student loans provided under the Federal Student Aid Programs usually begins 6 to 9 months after a person graduates or drops out of school. In case of ‘The Smart Option Student Loan’, provided by Sallie Mae, the borrower is expected to pay only interest when he is in school, while after graduating he has to make both principal and interest payments.

Lenders have their own repayment schedule, and any delay in making payments can have serious consequences. For instance, in case of Federal loans, which are repaid in installments, default on even a single payment can result in accelerating the repayment schedule for the remaining amount of the loan. The government can take away or ‘garnish’ 15% of a students disposable income as penalty. A portion of social security retirement benefits and disability benefits might also be withheld. Access to other Federal loans may be restricted. Of course, both government and private lenders can sue a person for defaulting, not to mention the impact of such a default on credit scores. A student loan default can remain on record for 7 years. Hence defaults should be avoided at all costs.

How to Avoid Student Loan Defaults

Alternative Repayment Plans: There are various repayment plans for Federal Loans. A student can consider switching between repayment plans, in case he feels that he is likely to default. Currently there are 4 such plans: Level, Graduated, Income Sensitive, and Extended. The level plan requires a person to pay the same amount of interest and principal during the term of the loan (usually 10 years). In case of graduated plans, a person starts with a lower payment and gradually increases the amount of payment every 2 years. This plan requires a minimum bank balance of $2500. Income based repayment plans will come into effect on 1st July 2009, and these may be appropriate for people with low income, since the amount of repayments cannot exceed 25% of their gross salary. The minimum payment can be as low as 4% of the gross salary. For people who borrowed before October 1998, the extended repayment plan can allow them to extend the term of the loan by 25 years.

Consolidating Federal and Private Student Loans: Consolidation student loans result in reducing the interest rate on several loans by replacing them with one loan that has an extended repayment period, and consequently, a lower rate of interest. Consolidation is an option that can be considered both, before and after default. Federal government allows consolidation of loans in case of Federal Family Education Loans (FFEL) and Direct Loans. In order to qualify for a FFEL consolidation loan, a person needs to make 3 voluntary on-time payments after defaulting on student loans.

Seeking Forbearance: Forbearance refers to a situation wherein the borrower is exempted from making payments on student loans for a certain period of time. During this period interest accumulates on the loans. Forbearance on federal loans can be requested in case of poor health, if monthly payments exceed 20% of the borrower’s monthly income, or in case a person is unable to pay the loan within 10 years. Private lenders generally grant forbearance in case of extreme hardships, while non- profit organizations like Student Loan Corp may grant forbearance up to a maximum period of 12 months at no additional costs.

Deferrals on Student Loans: A deferral is similar to forbearance since both result in postponing the repayment of the loan. However, in case of forbearance, interest continues to accumulate, while in case of deferral, interest does not accrue on the loan during the deferral period. Deferrals can be obtained under the following conditions: temporary disability, enrollment in a rehabilitation program, unemployment, receiving public assistance due to economic hardships.

Canceling: A federal student loan can be canceled in case of permanent disability, military and other uniformed service, or by teaching lower strata of society. Volunteering for Peace Corps may also result in canceling the loan. Sometimes nurses and resident physicians can also get a cancellation on their student loans. Canceling a student loan is harder than obtaining a deferral on the loans.

Rising unemployment due to worsening economic conditions has resulted in a number of student loan defaults. In the last 5 years, the cost of obtaining a college degree has increased by 30%. Rising cost of education, coupled with increasing unemployment, has left most students with no option but to drop out of school. The good news for college drop outs is that, returning to school and studying part time can help them obtain a deferral on most student loans.
