The first area that we look at is that of Personal Attributes. This is a blend of knowledge, expertise, and competencies, encapsulated in the approach, the behaviour, of the leader. In organisations of all sizes and in all sectors, public and private, these characteristics are key to effective leadership. The essential personal attributes are as follows.

Behaving Ethically, by: learning about the ethical issues and concerns that impact on your business sector; adopting a balanced, open-minded approach to the ethical concerns of others; considering the ethical issues and implications of all personal actions and organisational activity; raising and discussing ethical issues before proposing or agreeing to decisions; resisting pressures from the organisation or its partners to achieve objectives by unethical means.

Thinking Strategically, by: learning and understanding how the different functions, physical divisions, and layers, of the organisation should work together: understanding the complexities of, and the changes happening in, the external environment, and considering how the organisation can best respond the these; understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the organisation, and the opportunities and threats facing it; understanding how the strategic objectives are influenced by all the current and forecast influences that will impact on the organisation; understanding that the operational objectives and targets must be in line with and support the strategic objectives of the organisation; being aware of and responding to the behaviour of current and potential competitors.

Concentrating On Results, by: contributing to the establishment of an organisational culture that demands high standards and high levels of performance; focusing on objectives and planned outcomes, at all times; dealing with issues and problems when they arise; planning and scheduling personal work and the work of others in ways which make best use of available resources; delegating appropriately; giving personal attention to the critical issues and events.

Managing Yourself, by: reflecting regularly on personal performance and progress; pro-actively asking for feedback on personal performance; changing personal behaviour in the light of feedback received; being responsible for your own personal development needs.

Presenting a Positive Image, by: adopting a leading role in initiating action and decision making; behaving in a professional manner at all times; being open-minded and responsive to the needs of others; visibly working towards personal and career development goals; adopting an ethical approach to all personal and organisational activity; being supportive to colleagues; demonstrating fairness and integrity at all times.

In Summary: these essential attributes are many, and difficult to maintain consistently, but they are the attributes needed by, and expected of, our business leaders. The size of the organisation, the business sector, whether public or private, is of no consequence. The leaders of all organisations should be role models for others, be visible champions of high standards of professional and ethical behaviour, be leaders who others in their organisations can be proud of, and be leaders that competitors are envious of. Not many of these characteristics are imbued in our leaders by default. They have to be learned, can be learned, and should then be continuously developed and enhanced. With these personal attributes in place, and being demonstrated in behaviour and actions, business leaders will be more effective and more successful.

Anti-Swearing Campaign Praised for Success

Madonna Hanna knew her idea was going to be a success when nearly 1,000 students signed up within the first two weeks of her program. Hanna, a teacher of Advanced Fashion Marketing at Bremerton High School in Bremerton, Washington, gave her students a final project to survey students, parents, and teachers about what could be done to improve the school. The survey asked questions in three areas – responsibility, respect, and safety. The results of the surveys showed that the top two issues of concern were swearing and attendance. So Hanna and her students decided to come up with a way to tackle the swearing problem in the school.

The campaign was launched in 2006 using information students gathered from the results of the survey. Materials were created with the slogan “Dare Not to Swear,” a slogan that had been tested with focus groups of students at the school. Using a 15-minute presentation given to the superintendent of schools and the BNS principal, the students were able to practice their communication skills and persuasion about their cause in describing the campaign. They asked for and were granted $1000 to use to purchase customized yellow and blue wristbands sporting the claim “I dare not to swear!” In their presentation they explained that the bands would be a visual reminder to all students, as well as a public relations tool to inform the community and parents that the school had launched the campaign against swearing.

All the promotional materials for the campaign – banners, t-shirts, informational flyers, pledge sign-up sheets – were designed by the students using the merchandising skills they learned in Hanna’s Beginning Fashion Marketing class. Student groups were invited to sign up, and letters were sent to coaches and athletic advisors encouraging their participation. Groups and teams were asked to wear gold and blue clothing on the launch day of the campaign. Press releases were issued to local newspapers and media outlets, and both the mayor of Bremerton as well as the governor proclaimed October 26th to be “BHS Dare Not to Swear Day.” The campaign was kicked off during a lunch hour with a three students manning a sign-up table and two more students roaming around the cafeteria with sign-up sheets on clipboards.

The project was a rousing success, gaining recognition in both state and national media coverage. Local businesses helped out by providing promotional shirts and donating moneys for incentives for students. Even Laura Bush, the First Lady at that time, sent the students a letter of encouragement hoping that the campaign for better manners would sweep the nation. The Milken Family Foundation provided Hanna with a $6000 grant for youth community service, which Hanna used to keep the program running and expand it to students in elementary and middle schools.

The BHS “Dare Not to Swear” campaign was awarded the Washington Education Association’s Human & Civil Rights Student Involvement Award during its first year of operation, and the Milken grant provided the funds necessary to keep the program afloat. The success of the program, combined with its popularity among students, made Hanna a local hero and firmly planted the seeds of teaching students the value of good manners and civilized speaking. Swearing at BHS has not stopped completely, but there is now a raised awareness of the impropriety of swearing, and the better options that are available for good communication.

Effective leadership forms the backbone of a successful business, as it allows the firms to utilize their resources efficiently. Even though it is much more prominent in the corporate world, the same rule is applicable to various other sectors, including sports and politics. In an organization which acknowledges the importance of leadership development, employees demonstrate a positive attitude, which in turn reflects on their performance. Here are the key qualities of a good mentor.

A good mentor will have experience in the industry. He or she will be able to coach you both offline and online. Find out exactly how you will be trained to build your business. What is the system you will follow. If their system is centered on an exclusive hot lead source, that’s a red flag. Find someone who can prove they have mastered the Internet.

The right mentor will be easily accessible. You need someone you can get in touch with day or night. When you have a hot prospect in the day-time and your mentor is at his/her job then, that’s a problem. Join someone who is a full-time networker. Call your prospective mentor’s office at 10am. Save My Marriage Or Relationship – Getting to the Core of Relationship Problems

Many people search on my website because their relationship has run into difficulties and they are looking for help or ideas. The truth is that sustaining a successful romantic relationship is one of the hardest things we will ever do in life. After falling in love and the ‘honeymoon’ period, we all have to work on our relationships. This is because relationships bring up our deepest fears and insecurities. We can even think of relationship problems as our best opportunity to heal our personal issues – that is why we have come together with our partner.

I could offer you some temporary fixes to an ailing relationship, but if we are really going to save it and turn it into a lifetime partnership we must learn how to work on the negative issues that come up between us and a partner. To save a relationship and make it sustainable into the future we must be willing to heal the core issues that have caused it to run into difficulties in the first place.

Unexpressed Fear and Needs

All relationship problems arise from a breakdown in the loving connection between two people. There will always be some negative emotions that have not been expressed in the relationship – it is the fear associated with these, usually unconscious, feelings that destroys the relationship. The unexpressed feelings cause us to separate from our partner because we do not want them to see our negative side in case they reject us. Ironically, this is exactly what our protective strategy brings about!

Out of our fear comes our needs and these create demands on our partners. If there is a problem in a relationship, one or more significant need is NOT being met. Interestingly this will be the same need that your partner also feels is lacking in the relationship. By identifying your unmet needs you can give this same thing to your partner and they will automatically begin to give this same thing back to you. It is even better if you can talk about your fears and needs with your partner in an emotionally mature way. Honest and heartfelt communication is the best way to save a relationship. It can take courage to express your feelings but this is the way forward in a relationship problem. Sometimes it takes time and the help of a third party to do this, so you might consider some counselling. As you communicate about your unmet needs and fears you will find that your partner shares them and any problems will then fall away.

Arguments and Rows

Relationship fights are about who is going to meet the needs of the other person. Given that they are always shared by both partners, you can see how futile this is. To end an argument and prevent others occurring you must be willing to stop the fight over needs and think about what you could give to the relationship to make it better. Such leadership only comes when we recognise the cause of the fights and gain sufficient emotional maturity not to be triggered into anger and attack.

Judgements

Our judgements about our partners are really our self-judgements. We project out the parts of ourselves that we do not like on the people around us. What are you judging in your partner? What annoys you about them? Perhaps they are always busy at work and you don’t feel they value you. If so, how much do you value yourself and how much quality time do you give to yourself. By working on your own self-esteem (see my website for more ideas) you will become more attractive to your partner. After all, they fell in love with you because of the positive qualities they saw in you – find these again in yourself, embody them with all your senses and start giving them once again.

Spirituality

If you have a spiritual or religious belief you can ask for help and guidance from God (or however you know a divine or spiritual presence in your life). At the core of all relationship problems is a loss of faith in our own spirit and divine, loving connections. In fact we are afraid of this much connection – afraid of a spiritual oneness where there is just love for ourselves, everybody and everything. It seems that we create our relationship problems to avoid accepting our true loving destinies. Any spiritual practice will help with re-connecting with our spirit and help us to find peace and love in our romantic relationships.

Love

I assume you first got together with your partner because you felt so much love for them. At that time you both put aside your fears and needs and discovered unconditional love. Being human means that those fears often return but we can heal them best with a partner providing we are willing and brave enough to go into those areas of pain in our mind that we have hidden away. We avoid expressing our pain because we don’t want our partner to see what we perceive as a weakness – we fear they will reject us and leave us, and yet if we don’t express them the relationship is at great risk. Therefore a willingness to open our hearts and just become more authentic will always reveal the truth in a relationship and allow both partners to grow and take their lives forward.

So what is it that is holding your relationship back? Now is the time to grasp the nettle and open your heart. Feel into your own pain and hidden insecurities and realise that these are also in your partner, but probably cleverly hidden by compensatory behaviour. Your partner needs your help and you currently have more emotional awareness. They need your forgiveness for any failings and your emotional courage to inspire them to heal their own insecurities. Pour your love, appreciation and gratitude onto your partner and re-discover all those things that you adored about them in the beginning.

Becoming a Physical Therapist

Those of us who have played competitive sports have likely suffered sports injuries at one point or another. I remember time spent in the training room year round as I participated in football in the fall, then wrestling in winter, then baseball and track in the spring. I appreciate the many times I received treatments from college student trainers who taped my ankles, wrapped injured ribs, massaged a sore pitching arm, and helped with rehabilitating muscle injuries. The support I received while playing high school sports came from people who were competent about what they were doing. What all is involved in becoming a physical therapist? Here’s the scoop.

Physical Therapists (or PTs) make a career out of helping people who have suffered injuries. Some, like the ones I knew while playing high school sports, focus on sports injuries. Others, like my cousin Joe, work with elderly, helping them to keep their bodies functioning as they fight against the debilitating effects of aging. There are other physical therapy specialties, including dealing with accident victims and working with patients struggling with multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, or other genetic disorders that affect physical functionality.

Unlike occupations such as nurses or doctors who work in emergency situations and often have to work awkward hours, the majority of physical therapists keep normal business working hours or at least hours that don’t spill too late into the night. Many physical therapists work at hospitals or clinics where patients come to receive treatments and go through workouts. Sports physical therapists often spend their time in weight rooms and other training facilities on campuses or sports complexes. Recommendations Are No Guarantee

So you have a contractor for your kitchen cabinet renovations that has been recommended by a friend, family, or you read about them on web services. This means you are guaranteed good service…right? Not necessarily. In the world of home service professionals nothing is for certain. You could go through all of the right steps in searching for a contractor and hire a contractor that everyone recommends….and still end up unsatisfied.

For instance, a member of our staff had received a recommendation for an HVAC repair contractor from an acquaintance. The contractor, lets call him Dave, seemed like a good guy and gave our staff member an unbelievable price on some air conditioning work he needed. His price and service were both great. Our staff member used him several other times over the course of a year. One job even involved a new installation, priced at several thousand dollars. Each time our staff member was happy with the price and service. He recommended Dave to several friends.

However, several months later our staff member learned that Dave had botched a job at one of his friend’s homes, and even took an up-front payment and never returned to perform the work. He later learned that another job Dave had performed was not completed and, again, Dave had taken money and disappeared. Finally, he discovered that Dave was not licensed to perform heat and air conditioning repairs and was operating under a false license number.

What happened with this situation? Well, our staff member later learned that Dave was filing for bankruptcy (another reason to be cautious of super low estimates…is the company making enough money to stay in business?). He was most likely trying to get as much money in as short of an amount of time to help with his personal financial situation. Also, he learned that Dave was moving to another state. This helps to explain how he blatantly had no regard for his customer’s feelings…he was not going to be in business long and knew it.

The story above goes to show how contractors can change over the course of time. Likewise, larger companies can hire new management or hire inexperienced labor that can affect the way the customers are satisfied with the company. Contractor’s customer satisfaction can change because of any of these situations.

How can you help avoid hiring the wrong contractor, despite the fact that they have excellent references?

• Ask for license and insurance information.
• Call the references and ask when the contractor performed their service….if there are no recent customers that should tell you something.
• Ask the contractor for their last 3 customer’s contact information vs. the referral list they may supply.
• Super low estimates should raise concern.
• Companies asking for entire payments upfront should raise concern.
• Verify address and contact information for the kitchen cabinet renovation company you hire
