Roadmap to Online Success – One Hour a Day, Five Days a Week

All great journeys begin with a single step. If you stand on the sideline and mutter to yourself about the distance, then you will never start your journey, let alone complete it.

As youngsters, we did not worry about time or distance. We only knew that we wanted to go, and we could not understand our parents’ insistence that something was too far away. Now, as adults, we sometimes let our adult sensibilities stand in the way of what we want.

Let me ask you a question. Have you ever thought to yourself that you would like to start your own online business and cash in on the success that others are experiencing on the Internet? If so, what is stopping you?

Many people tell me that they do not have the time to start or run an online business.

Other people tell me that they do not have the resources to start and run an online business.

Some people tell me that they do not have the requisite knowledge.

Does any of this sound familiar to you?

STOP! THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE SAYING.

How much television do you watch each week?

How much money do you squander on fountain soft drinks or snacks?

Have you ever watched an educational television program or asked a friend about something you wanted to learn about?

My point is this…

The sociologists tell us that the average American watches 15 hours of television each week. If you could bring yourself to give up one program each day — you decide which ones — then you would have all of the time that you require to start and operate a successful online business.

If you buy your soft drinks in two-liter bottles, you will pay as much or less for your soft drink habit as you currently spend on one 32-ounce fountain drink. The money you save on frivolous spending could more than pay for your web hosting and a bit of advertising.

It you have taken 15 minutes out of your day in the last year to learn something new, then you have the skills necessary to learn what you need to learn, to be successful in an online business. It doesn’t take much time or effort to learn what you need to learn, if you can find yourself a good mentor to help you get up to speed about this medium.

I have a full-time job, and yet, I have managed to successfully start two online businesses.

IT IS ALL ABOUT COMMITMENT

Commit yourself to one hour a day, $20-$30 per month, and one hour’s worth of education in a workweek. If you can meet these bare minimum requirements, then you too can find the success you desire and crave.

The definition of success varies from person-to-person.

Maybe success for you would be to earn an extra $100 per month, so that you can take the family to an extra movie a month or give your wife a “mom’s night off”, where she does not have to cook at all one day a month.

Maybe success for you would be to find an extra $250 per month so that you can afford to take those classes at the local University Extension, so that you can get that big promotion and big raise at your job.

Maybe success for you would be the extra $500 per month so that you can afford to pay for a new used car for you and your family.

Perhaps, your idea of success is much bigger. Maybe you want to earn enough from an online business so that you can quit your job. Maybe you hope to earn enough that you could leave that 60-hour a week job and have more time to spend with your family. That is definitely a goal worth aiming to achieve. Your kids will only grow up once.

HERE IS THE ROADMAP TO GET YOU STARTED

1. You do not have to have your own product or service to make money online. You can sell other people’s products and services, and you can earn a commission on those transactions. There are two types of programs available that can help you to sell other people’s products and services. They are called Network Marketing/MLM programs and Affiliate Programs. The Network Marketing/MLM variety tends to offer a more comprehensive system for making money.

2. Find a program that offers a variety of products and services so that you can extend your own product and service offerings and reach out to a wider marketplace.

3. Find a program that offers more tutorials and resources to help you to become successful.

4. Find a program that offers mentoring through their systems. Network Marketing/MLM type companies rely on the mentor structure to grow their businesses. With Affiliate Programs, you are often on your own. Mentor’s are individuals who are in the same business as you are, who are willing to guide you and help you to become successful in the business.

5. Commit yourself to one hour per day, five days per week, for learning about the business, and growing your online business.

6. Don’t give up on your business. Don’t give up on yourself. This should actually be the first item on my list. The Network Marketing model will not fail, if you put your mind and energy to following through with your plan. If anyone was to tell you that Network Marketing/MLM is a dead-end road, don’t listen to him or her. People who fail in Network Marketing/MLM are those who fail to make a commitment and fail to follow-through.

7. Don’t rely on the free website that the Network Marketing/MLM company provides to you. You can use this website to sell the companies products and services, but you do need to display it inside of your OWN domain. These days, you can register your domain for a year for much less than $20 per year, and you can get a good web hosting account for less than $30 per month. Your mentor can teach you how to set up your domain to host your web interface from your chosen Network Marketing/MLM program.

8. Try a couple of the products you sell through your Network Marketing/MLM program. In most cases, this is not a requirement, but it is a strong recommendation. Once you have used the product or service, you will understand much more about it, which will help you to tell other people about it and why they would want to purchase it.

If you use the resources that the company makes available to you, and you commit yourself to your $20-$30 per month and one hour a day, five days a week, you will soon find yourself basking in the success that you have desired for so long.

Don’t be afraid to contact your upline mentors. If you need help, ask for it. Your upline mentors are more successful, when you are more successful. It is in their best interest to help you find the success you so richly deserve.

What if you could start your own part-time business today? What if you could get started: with no technical know-how, without jeopardizing your current job, and without any of the headaches of a traditional business. What if I could give you simple-to-follow, easy-to-understand instructions on how to start and grow your business? What if you could get started for free and without commitment? Would you make a commitment to “yourself” to spend 5 hours a week learning the ropes, with my help? Visit http://part-time-work-at-home-opportunities.com/ to learn more.

Networking – The Success Connection

A Drop in the Bucket or Buckets of Opportunity

We have all questioned whether Chamber of Commerce after five meetings, the hours on the golf course, numerous business dinners and even the organized networking events have any bottom line value. After all, they take time and money. Is there any payback? Furthermore, when we are so busy doing all the right business networking, we may be overlooking, or even eliminating, natural networking opportunities that arise from hobbies, sports outings, social events or even the potential of casual situations that occur while standing in line or waiting in waiting-rooms. How much networking is enough? Too little? Overkill.

Networking: Yours, Mine and Ours

Everything we send out is either a positive or negative and comes back to us tenfold. Networking is the way in which we take the contacts we already have and send out ripples that bring back waves of new business. Ideally we want networking to be simple, painless and productive. It’s easy for experienced business networkers to rhyme off the pluses of mutual benefit, positive give-and-take and win-win relationships. However, the new age of business networking is adding relationships into the mix. Now It’s not all about me. It’s not all about you. It’s about us — pulling together — in the same direction.

From Hard Sell to Soft Touch

The days of the hard-sell “Here’s my card. Call me. Who’s next?” networker have been replaced. Today’s more knowledgeable buyer wants to know who they are dealing with and whether they can trust you to deliver the goods before they hand over the cash.

You might still have your cards handy but now you write what you can do for your new contact or highlight what you heard them tell you. This alone could detour your business card from the wastebasket because you have moved from “I’m pressuring you!” to “Hey that felt good!”

Three “Know Knows” of Great Networking

1. Who You Know
2. When you consciously consider all the people you know and actually list them, you will be amazed at the number of people that you have varying levels of connection with. Consider that each of these people has a similar list to yours and you begin to see the huge resource that you could tap into. Who Knows You
3. The real effectiveness of networking comes when the best-qualified people in terms of your success have gone beyond the acquaintance only level. They are actively seeking you out because they know you and what you do, they know what you want and they know what they have that you need. Know How
The bottom line is definitely know how. The know how it took to identify what you need. Then the know how of customizing your network by identifying the priority connections you are seeking. It’s also the know how of not stopping too soon. If you stop too soon you send time and money down the drain. Now is time to go beyond the self-analysis. It is time to train your networking team to find the potential referrals you need. It’s hard to imagine, but with each trusted connection that you establish you gain the enthusiastic referrals of your own Personal-Networker.

Is Your Network Working for You?

If your networking is effective, you will be able to give positive, detailed answers to each of the following questions:

* When was the last time your network sent a business referral your way?
* Does your network provide you with the expert contacts you need?
* Where do you source out new ideas or pick up on new trends?
* Can you see yourself starting a joint venture with someone from your contact list?
* Is your network tapping into your expertise by providing you with speaking engagements, participation on panels or consulting opportunities?

We believe small changes to your networking strategy can turn on unlimited potential. Here are some ideas to consider before you take your next networking opportunity: BEFORE:

* Take 10 to 15 minutes to determine who you would like to meet
* Have your Networking Kit ready: business cards, relevant schedule of other networking events, copy of article you may want to share (at the END of the event)
* Make the effort to attend about 4 events per month

DURING:

* Get involved as a volunteer at the event. You could make great connections.
* Be the host. Everyone loves to be introduced.
* Approach 1 or 3 people. Pairs are hard to break into.
* Build relationships.
* Don’t measure success on how many of your business cards you gave out.

AFTER:

* Make it your policy to return calls with 24-48 hours.
* Check in regularly with everyone you identify as a Personal-Networker
* Give great referrals. What you send out will come back to you.

Thank you for tapping in to “Networking: The Success Connection”.

Anti-Swearing Campaign Praised for Success

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

Madonna Hanna knew her idea was going to be a success when nearly 1,000 students signed up within the first two weeks of her program. Hanna, a teacher of Advanced Fashion Marketing at Bremerton High School in Bremerton, Washington, gave her students a final project to survey students, parents, and teachers about what could be done to improve the school. The survey asked questions in three areas – responsibility, respect, and safety. The results of the surveys showed that the top two issues of concern were swearing and attendance. So Hanna and her students decided to come up with a way to tackle the swearing problem in the school.

The campaign was launched in 2006 using information students gathered from the results of the survey. Materials were created with the slogan “Dare Not to Swear,” a slogan that had been tested with focus groups of students at the school. Using a 15-minute presentation given to the superintendent of schools and the BNS principal, the students were able to practice their communication skills and persuasion about their cause in describing the campaign. They asked for and were granted $1000 to use to purchase customized yellow and blue wristbands sporting the claim “I dare not to swear!” In their presentation they explained that the bands would be a visual reminder to all students, as well as a public relations tool to inform the community and parents that the school had launched the campaign against swearing.

All the promotional materials for the campaign – banners, t-shirts, informational flyers, pledge sign-up sheets – were designed by the students using the merchandising skills they learned in Hanna’s Beginning Fashion Marketing class. Student groups were invited to sign up, and letters were sent to coaches and athletic advisors encouraging their participation. Groups and teams were asked to wear gold and blue clothing on the launch day of the campaign. Press releases were issued to local newspapers and media outlets, and both the mayor of Bremerton as well as the governor proclaimed October 26th to be “BHS Dare Not to Swear Day.” The campaign was kicked off during a lunch hour with a three students manning a sign-up table and two more students roaming around the cafeteria with sign-up sheets on clipboards.

The project was a rousing success, gaining recognition in both state and national media coverage. Local businesses helped out by providing promotional shirts and donating moneys for incentives for students. Even Laura Bush, the First Lady at that time, sent the students a letter of encouragement hoping that the campaign for better manners would sweep the nation. The Milken Family Foundation provided Hanna with a $6000 grant for youth community service, which Hanna used to keep the program running and expand it to students in elementary and middle schools.

The BHS “Dare Not to Swear” campaign was awarded the Washington Education Association’s Human & Civil Rights Student Involvement Award during its first year of operation, and the Milken grant provided the funds necessary to keep the program afloat. The success of the program, combined with its popularity among students, made Hanna a local hero and firmly planted the seeds of teaching students the value of good manners and civilized speaking. Swearing at BHS has not stopped completely, but there is now a raised awareness of the impropriety of swearing, and the better options that are available for good communication.

Ashmax Marketing System Review-how Can I Have Success In My Ashmax Business

Friday, September 17th, 2010

AshMax Buzz

Many People have been talking about the AshMax Business all over the internet lately. I see it all over youtube, I see tweets about it on twitter, people send messages about it in Facebook. What is all this buzz about? Can I have success in AshMax?

I just want to inform you that many people are marketing AshMax the wrong way. I will tell you why people are doing it wrong after I provide you with some information about the opportunity.

The Company

The company was created by Ash Mufareh who is a top income earner in Global Domains International (GDI). AshMax integrates two programs which are GDI and Freeway to Success (FTS). GDI is a domain hosting site while FTS offers massive discounts on shopping online for food, clothes and everything.

The Compensation Plan

The compensation plan with AshMax is based on a 5×5 matrix compensation structure. The matrix assumes that everyone will sponsor at least 5 people into FTS and GDI through AshMax. With your matrix full of 3905 people, you are able to make $22,295 every month. At least that is what they tell you on their website.

The Cost and Challenge

The cost of signing up in AshMax is Free, but you still have to pay a total of $25 ($10 GDI and $15 FTS) to make an income. AshMax gives you a 20 day challenge to sponsor at least 5 people within that time frame. By accomplishing this, you will be done for ever. There is a flip side. If you are unable to sponsor 5 people in 20 days you are removed from the system.

My Thoughts

I really like how the system is setup to weed out the tire kickers and individuals that jump from one opportunity to the next. Just about anyone who has been involved in MLM or network marketing understands the frustrations from having to deal with the tire kickers and opportunity hoppers.

There is one thing that concerns me. I don’t understand how you can make $22K per month paying only $25 per month per person. Some of the numbers don’t seem to make sense, but I am not saying that this company is not legitimate. I do believe that if someone knows how to market their business online and puts in the work, they can easily sponsor 5 people within 20 days.

How to Market AshMax

Now I need to tell you the proper way of marketing your business online. When many people get into online marketing, they tend to promote their company up front. Many people do it in ways that annoy the heck out of people. Every day I get a tons of emails telling me about how great someone’s opportunity is.

They try to convince me to join by telling me how ground floor the opportunity is, that I will be getting a ton of spillover, etc. However, people are not interested in joining businesses. They are interested in joining people.

When someone is presented with a business opportunity, they will usually go to Google and do research on the company. If they like it they will join a leader they feel that will help them. You don’t want to be that person that introduces your opportunity only to have them join someone other than you.

This is why you need to learn how to brand and market yourself as an expert. This is called attraction marketing. People don’t join companies or marketing systems, they join people. You need to learn attraction marketing so that you can attract people to join you in your AshMax Business.

Success Really Does Come in Cans

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

I wish I’d coined the phrase, “Success comes in Cans.” Its accuracy was on my mind as I spent time with two people in Can’t Mode. One of them was open to reframing thoughts and statements; the other was not.

One is currently in a funk and has been paying rent to live in Funkville for a couple of years. Ask him what he wants to do and he’ll tell you. Ask him what he might do to get started or offer to connect him with someone doing it and his response is, “No one will hire me.”

“Well, what about XYZ?”
“Nope. I just told you, no one will hire me.”
“What about…”
“Nothing I try works.
“But what about…”
“Nothing I could try will work either.”

How far will he go and how fast will he get there?

The other had a different response when she used Can’t in her regard.

“If you say you can’t, how will you ever do it?”
“I never thought about it like that.”
“Let me share a statement with you: There’s a way to do this and I’m going to find it. What might happen if you repeatedly state that to yourself?”
“I’ll probably find it and create what I want.”

Both individuals are creative and intelligent. The woman was open to brainstorming possibilities, which is what we did the rest of our conversation. As you see in the dialogue with the first, he slammed the door shut on everything.

Recently, I woke feeling fine then found myself in a funk. Did I want to stay there or feel even a little bit better? Better, of course. Were my thoughts and feelings at the time going to create more of what I wanted to expand in my life? Not those thoughts; and what they were was not what I wanted more of. When we have a dream or goal, we get excited. Then we get scared. There’s only one sure way out of fear: Action. Action sets us free.

I’m not saying it’s always easy to shift our focus to what we prefer to think and feel; but if we commit to it, we’ll do it. If we take positive action, we’ll achieve it even faster. If we have a target and keep aiming at it, eventually we’re going to hit it. After a while, we’ll start to hit it more than we miss it.

If your target is to feel great more often than not, aim for it. At the same time, remember to pay attention to what you learn about yourself in the process.

Success comes in Cans.

5 Things All Affiliate Marketers Should be Doing to Ensure Success

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Are you curious to the secret of successful affiliate marketers? Have you ever wondered how did they do it? Would you like to know the truth? If you are planning to become an affiliate marketer as well, then you would also want to know the things that could ensure your success. But is there really a formula that would ensure success of an affiliate or it is just pure luck.

Affiliate marketers are an important part of online business as they help companies promote their services, products and expertise. Moreover, apart from promoting or selling other people’s commodities you can easily earn money most especially if you will work even harder to achieve the level of success that you desired. However, working hard does not mean killing yourself from too much work, but to just simply work harder and smarter.

So to help you out, the following are the 5 things all affiliate marketers should be doing to ensure success. Some affiliate marketers already did this, which is why they are successful now.

1.Promote only Product that Interest You – Some affiliate marketers often made mistakes in choosing the kind of products they will promote. Most of the time they choose only products that is popular without giving thought if that product is indeed for them.

Product that really interest you will be easier to promote as you already know everything about it, hence information that could be very useful in attracting potential customers are the key to your ultimate success.

2.Pick the Right Keywords – it is important to ensure that the keyword that you will be using applies to the product that you are marketing. Never just create keywords for your site, in fact, always check first with Google keyword tool so as not to waste your effort.

3.Know Your Competition – Knowing the competition is vital as this could determine if you could really rank in Google SERP. Too much competition would mean a harder task for you and therefore would need an extensive preparation.

In addition, knowing ahead your competition gives you edge because now you have the chance to decide if you want to avoid too much competition or just go right ahead with the possibility of losing your investment because of the quantity of your competitors.

4.Use Quality Promotion – In promoting your products it pays to ensure that quality is always maintained. Hence, make sure that your content is excellent to ensure large views and click rate on your affiliate products.

5.Quality Backlinks – Links are important to your business and so make certain that your site is optimized and all your marketing effort are also provided with working links. No backlinks or broken links is bad for business and definitely not going to make you money as nobody can find you with broken links.

So make certain that you check for broken links once in awhile so you would not waste even one potential sale or miss the chance to increase your traffic.

Internet Marketing Promotion: 5 Steps To Success

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

The competitiveness in the internet marketing promotions arena is escalating as more entrepreneurs enter the realms of self employment. But don’t allow yourself to become disheartened as this provides a fantastic opportunity in your home business due to an increase in your target market.

However, to take advantage of the circumstances you need to be well positioned. This will need a detailed home business lead generation marketing plan that will attract quality visitors to your website, resulting in sufficient online leads.

5 FUNDAMENTALS TO INTERNET MARKETING PROMOTION SUCCESS

1. Who Is Your Ideal Target Market?

I’m amazed at how many home business owners lack a clear image of what their ultimate prospect looks like. I don’t mean their physical form, but rather their personality, wants, aspirations, circumstances and constraints? See yourself in the “life of your ideal prospect” and form a detailed image in your mind as to precisely who your customer is that you want to draw to your business.

By paying attention to your “ideal” prospect, you will be able to put more effort into speaking to people who have already made the decision they want their own business, rather than those who are just inquiring. It’s essential for you to accept this concept.

When undertaking the task of choosing your idyllic customer, reflect on your personality and the type of individual you best interact with as well. Usually, greater success is accomplished when communicating your business to prospects you connect with.

2. Match Your Internet Marketing Promotion Message

Get inside the mind of your model prospect and imagine the world through their eyes. How do they think, what are their wants and what is their main motive for why they desire it. 85% of individuals make decisions based on emotion, rather than reason, thus direct your internet marketing promotion message to the emotional benefits of how your product or business opportunity can meet their needs.

3. Consistent Persistence

The next step is to perform as many targeted online lead generation marketing campaigns as possible in order to reach your prospects. A word of advice – select 2 or 3 internet lead generation methods that you are content with and generate sufficient internet marketing promotion campaigns using those techniques, rather than trying to focus on receiving online leads from every potential marketing avenue. Be consistent with your frequency of campaigns.

4. Quantify Your Internet Marketing Promotion Results

Money, effort and time are valuable resources so it’s in your best interests to measure your marketing campaigns’ success. Identify those which are producing a satisfactory quality AND quantity of online leads. Determine how you can improve them to boost your results whilst at the same time removing those campaigns that aren’t meeting your expectations with regards to online lead volumes.

5. Keeping Ahead of the Internet Marketing Promotion Curve

Your continued success in generating adequate home business leads depends largely on you staying abreast of internet marketing promotion trends.

You can achieve this by subscribing to industry newsletters or you can outsource your internet marketing promotion tasks to professional companies (though I caution against total outsourcing models). But, I’ve found that the best method to keep up to date with the hottest online lead generation marketing trends is to belong to a community of like-minded people. This way not only do you hear what’s new before many others, but you are also able to leverage off the experience and success of others and discover new strategies. The power of such an influential community is invaluable.

These 5 steps map out the main elements of an internet marketing promotion strategy that you should be focusing on. The outlook for home business owners is exceptionally bright, so the timing is just right for attracting quality home business leads to your business. Don’t hinder your success by making a simple process a complex one. Get focused and take action today!

Network Your Way To Success – The Basics Of Professional Networking

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

One of the most crucial relationship-building tools you can employ in any profession, networking allows you to build a rapport with other professionals. It allows you to forge successful partnerships, and create a visible presence in an individual or business capacity.

To do this, you first need to provide something of value, something relevant to your field or business that will generate interest among your peers. Arm yourself with research before you attend an important conference, so you’re ready with a well informed and researched presentation. Or if you are a member of your professional association, or the Rotary Club, for instance, plan to speak in public. This will a long way to demonstrate that keep up-to-date with current developments in your field and reinforce the perception that you are valuable asset in any organization or project.

The key word by which you should be looking out to form acquaintances and relationships is ‘relevant’. It is important to zero in on the people who can be of use to you whether its in your profession or your town.

The yardstick for measuring whether a person is relevant or not depends on the way things work in a certain profession and the common interests. Thus a person might choose to build his network with people hailing from a certain place in case he wants to build the network locally. In another case he might just choose to create contacts with people associated with your business area.

Few of the ways to find these relevant people involve religiously looking through the newspapers to identify the key players. Be on an alert during conversations, as a name that could be of use might just crop up. You might just also ask people who you think can help you with these names.

The next step is to contact relevant persons individually. This is usually best done in writing. Send a brief letter about your company or your work, and ask for suggestions. Make sure you can express specifically what you liked about something you saw from this person, and let her or him know you would be interested in meeting at a specific conference or group meeting.

There are a few points that you need to keep in mind while formulating the letter. Since basically the letter seeks to convey a message of professional meeting, the letter should be professional. The letter shouldn’t look like an ode to that person, and neither should it look like an order stating that the person is required to show up. Mention the meeting politely, as long as the other person has time. And don’t take rejections too personally or to your heart.

One-on-one meetings are a great way to get the ball rolling. When you’re next at a conference, just go up and introduce yourself to a relevant contact. If you send your introductory letter first, it will make talking that much easier. Meeting people in these face-to-face encounters helps you in your network-building, and puts you in the public eye. So people always remember you, what you do and who you are. Especially when you follow up, when you connect to keep communications open with others, they will respond. And help you build a rich and successful network.

The Gurus Promise Success

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Anyone who has ever been involved with or even researched online home based businesses has probably heard the names of dozens of so-called gurus in the field. They are touting their wares and promising success to those who will follow them, join their program, and buy their products.

Recently Mike Dillard ran a contest for people to buy a new service he was starting, and a new car was awarded to the person who was able to secure the most signups. The winner was Jonathan Budd, a self made multi-millionaire in his mid-twenties. Did he need a new car? Certainly he could afford to buy his own luxury automobile of any make he wanted. Yet he was awarded the car because he, as an affiliate of Mike Dillard, was able to garner the most subscriptions for the new service.

Mike Dillard and Jonathan Budd are two of the many gurus in the network (MLM or multi-level) marketing and online home based business field. They are young men who have achieved tremendous success through hard work and hitting upon the right formulas to draw large amounts of money to them. They both claim to have been failures in the network marketing business by using the old MLM techniques during their young lives, only to later find success with new methods. There are dozens of these gurus working in the online business areas, and many are good friends with each other.

Having purchased some of their money making products and getting on their email lists, I regularly receive email with information and videos from several gurus including Mike Dillard and Jonathan Budd. I have never met nor spoken to them, but they seem like nice people. Their emails and videos indicate that they are anxious to help multitudes of people find financial success. They claim that money does not matter that much to them, and they are probably sincere in wanting to help others.

Here are some of the ways to build your business according to the gurus:
• Sign up for their services and buy their products
• Use personal websites and videos
• Join Affiliate programs and use Click Bank
• Develop your own Blogs
• Participate in Social Networks
• Use PPC, pay per click, CPA (cost per action) advertising, and Banner Ads

When you sign up to receive some of their free information, you will get on their email list. Even if you never buy anything from them, you will receive valuable information which can be beneficial to you in building your business. They are banking on the fact that a good percentage of their list will buy their products, and that is how they make money. They are willing to help the masses to a degree, but they are naturally most interested in those who will help them make even more money.

The gurus promise success if you follow their recommendations. Can they deliver? There is no doubt that they do assist hundreds of people in finding financial and personal success. Many thousands more fall by the wayside unfulfilled and unsatisfied. It takes super determination and effort to become one of their success stories, but it is possible.

Law of Success: Part II

Welcome to the second part of this special three part series commemorating the 21st Century Edition of Napoleon Hill’s landmark work, “Law of Success,” in which he reveals 17 Principles of Success based on his 25 years of research studying the lives of over 500 of the world’s greatest achievers.

In this special three part series, I’m highlighting these 17 Principles of Success both as a refresher for those who are already familiar with Hill’s work, and as an introductory guide to the essential qualities of achievement for those who have not yet had the chance to study this great personage who started the personal development revolution. Enjoy:

Principle # 6: Imagination

“Imagination is the workshop of the human mind and creative power of the soul,” writes Hill. “First comes thought; then organization of that thought into ideas and plans; then transformation of those plans into reality. The beginning, as you will observe, is in your imagination.”

According to Hill, there are two types of imagination: synthetic imagination and creative imagination. Synthetic imagination involves rearranging old ideas into new combinations that produce new solutions. Stimulating creative imagination involves a repetition of highly emotionalized thoughts that can be combined with visualization, meditation, and prayer focused on a chief aim or solving a difficult problem, and then surrendering the thoughts to infinite intelligence to come up with new ideas, combinations, and plans.

Artists, inventors, and entrepreneurs frequently use some combination of both types of imagination. For example, many writers will often intentionally stop writing in the middle of a heated sentence or uncompleted paragraph at a particularly challenging point in the plot and “sleep on it.” During the rest of the night their subconscious mind, through the powers of creative intelligence, will work on the solution, and upon awakening, the writer will write beautifully to complete the idea.

Entrepreneurs will often brainstorm and write down all the ideas, challenges, and available solutions and resources concerning a challenging problem and then “forget about it.” They might go on vacation for an extended period of time. On returning, or even while they’re on vacation, new ideas spring up that help solve the problem.

To further develop your imagination, study yourself; find out the inner motivations that drive you to carry out certain tasks to completion while avoiding other tasks. Study other people and human behavior around you. If you want to know what the other person will do (whether a customer, boss, employee, partner, or competitor), use your imagination to put yourself in their shoes. What would you do if you were that person? By being able to look from another’s perspective, you not only help build your imagination muscles, you also help build bridges.

Principle # 7: Enthusiasm

Enthusiasm comes from the Greek root “entheos” which literally means God within. Enthusiasm is the vital force that impels action. Great leaders inspire others to action from their own enthusiasm which is highly contagious.

“It’s not so much what you say as it is the tone and manner in which you say it that makes a lasting impression,” writes Hill.

I recall a time when a “recruiter” had called and left a message for me requesting an interview. I checked out the company’s website and liked what I had to see. I was ready to come in for an interview, but when I returned the recruiter’s call and spoke to her, the tone of her voice clearly indicated that she wasn’t happy with her job and that I was just a number to make her appointment quota.

While the conversation was polite and professional, her tone and manner of speaking said she didn’t care. Needless to say, I did not come in for an interview, and it wouldn’t be a far stretch to guess that that recruiting company was losing business by the truckload on account of that one person – probably hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue.

It’s surprising (or maybe not so surprising given the poor customer service survey results across North America) that companies are willing to go on losing millions by treating their frontline workers who have first line of contact with customers as an “expense” instead of as an investment.

The companies that will turn out to be champions in this information economy are the ones that treat their customer service and sales staff as VPs of Customer Relations. These organizations will have a HUGE competitive advantage by investing just a fraction of the money (money that would normally be lost to poor service) towards paying above industry average rates to retain quality customer service professionals, investing in their professional development, teaching basic human relations skills, and helping to create a better work environment.

Principle # 8: Self-Control

Hill keenly points out that self control directs your enthusiasm. A wise business tenet is to keep cool when others are hot. As Hill says, “Those who control themselves usually boss the job.”

I can’t recall how many business deals I’ve lost because I contacted a potential client in a moment of anger or frustration (either due to the business on hand or something entirely different). It’s amazing how much more business one can drum up by simply counting to ten, taking a couple of deep breaths, and thinking of something pleasant for a few seconds before making or taking that important call!

If you’ve tried these types of techniques without much success and are still angry with someone, at least try ‘writing it out of your system’ before approaching this person. Write a steaming hot letter to this person venting about what you feel is inappropriate behavior or some problem or injustice you feel you might have encountered.

After you’ve read the letter to yourself, tear it up and throw it away! Now you can approach this person and make your case with a level head without blaming or getting overly emotional. Maybe it was a simple misunderstanding.

I’m not saying this method will always work. Sometimes you do have to confront someone and express your anger – but those moments are rare when it’s productive. Using this one technique alone can save you from countless relationship disasters and bad business deals, and might even help get you that promotion over the next person who blows his top!).

Never retaliate against those who offend you. Be a leader by being a person of poise and self-control.

Principle # 9: The Habit of Doing More Than Paid For

“Giving people a little more than what they expect is a good way to get back more than you’d expect”
- Robert Half

We get back in life what we give. By getting into the habit of always doing more than you’re paid for, you will meet with opportunities for expansion, advancement, and promotion at every turn of the corner. (You might not get these opportunities immediately with your current employer; but eventually competitors will take notice and will gladly provide you with plenty of opportunity if your employer is not willing to do so).

Napoleon Hill offers countless real-life examples of ordinary people reaching extraordinary heights of achievement and success using this one principle alone in his magnum opus: “Law of Success: The 21st-Century Edition.”

Principle # 10: A Pleasing Personality

Hill states that a pleasing personality is a person that attracts. It’s all about your character and how you carry yourself. Are you dressed for success as it relates to your field? Do you speak with self-confidence?

Do you offer a firm handshake and a warm smile, or a limp, ‘dead fish’ handshake with a rigid, forced smile? Do you offer an appropriate level of eye-contact given the cultural context or do you have shifty eyes that makes people feel uncomfortable? Are you flexible in mind, body, and spirit? Do you express genuine interest in others?

The best way to develop a pleasing personality is to show a keen interest in other people. If that recruiter had expressed even the slightest interest in what I did as a person, I would have overlooked the initial awkwardness of the call and come in for an interview. Her lack of a pleasing personality cost her and her company a number of lost contracts.

It’s so much more FUN and PROFITABLE to have a pleasing personality!

Principle # 11: Accurate Thinking

“The facts, just the facts, ma’am” – Sgt. Friday in Dragnet

Don’t believe everything you read in the news. Much of it is planted by powerful lobbyists and corporations with hidden agendas. Get into the habit of basing your decisions on factual information and avoiding gossip, rumors, and conjecture.

Even common day practices that are widely accepted can be based on wrong assumptions. In the Middle Ages, bloodletting was a common practice that was believed to help cure a variety of illnesses. It was a common belief among doctors that bad blood caused disease and so they bled patients for every imaginable ailment under the sun. This crude and ineffective medical ritual continued for 2,500 years until it was discovered that germs, not bad blood, were responsible for disease.

Today, we have our own version of bloodletting that is far more devious than in the Middle Ages. Take for example invasive medical practices such as coronary stenting and angioplasty. Freakonomics author, Steven D. Levitt, sites a recent NY Times article which, according to Levitt, “tells of the compelling study which found that coronary stenting is typically no more effective than heart drugs, even though it is far more invasive — and, to be sure, profitable for the medical personnel involved.” (According to the NY Times article, “angioplasty and stenting generally cost between $25,000 and $50,000″).

I think we need a new name for 21st Century bloodletting. If you’ve read this far, perhaps you can convince Mr. Webster to add the term moneyletting to the dictionary.

If someone makes a sweeping statement that raises doubts, you can ask this person the question that Napoleon Hill likes asking: “How do you know?”

We haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of accurate thinking. But to get to the heart of Hill’s main idea, accurate thinking is about separating the important facts from the unimportant ones.

The important facts being any fact you can use in the attainment of your chief aim. I’m not saying that the unimportant facts can’t also help enrich your life. But by focusing most of your time on the important facts as it relates to your chief aim will help get you there further and faster…

I hope you enjoyed Part II of this “Law of Success” series. (You can visit my blog for Law of Success Part III).

In the meantime, share these principles with your peers, discuss the concepts and teach other people what you’ve learned. There’s no better way to learn than by teaching others.

If you haven’t already, I’d highly recommend getting a copy of Napoleon Hill’s classic bestseller: “Law of Success: The 21st-Century Edition.” It really is a great read and I rank it in my personal top 10 list.
